Baggage Handling Strike Heathrow October 6 - 9

I posted on a. facebook page that I was leaving for London and someone responded that I was going to be getting caught up in the baggage handlers strike taking place October 6 - 9.

I did google it and sure enough there is a strike of some maintenance workers at Heathrow
October 6 - 9.

The story said something about chaos and one handler throwing baggage off of the terminal.

So what is this all about? Are all terminals affected and all airlines affected?

When are Heathrow airport workers striking?

In October 170 baggage staff at Heathrow Airport will strike over 13 separate days.
Members of the Unite Union are striking over a pay dispute after they have rejected a below-inflation pay offer.
Unite previously said that if its members decided to launch the strike, it would “bring all terminals and airline baggage handling to a standstill”.
The strikes will be between 17:30 on 6 October and 6am on 9 October and for ten consecutive days starting on 20 October.
This will coincide with the autumn half-term getaway.

170 workers employed by one private company (Vanderlande) are set to strike for two periods. The first walkout will be from 5:30pm on October 6 to 6am on October 9. The second strike will take place for ten straight days from October 20 (October 20-29).

At all terminals.

They maintain and service the baggage carousels, rather than handle the baggage.

Of course the union will try to big up the likely impact. But normally Heathrow make alternative arrangements, so it will be a case of wait and see. I would suspect minimal impact.

But very likely minimal impact.
