I will be traveling to London with some folks who might be checking their bags (I've been carrying my bag on the plane for years). Do you know how long it usually takes to retrieve your baggage?
With British Airways Terminal 5, my experience has been that by the time you deplane and make it through immigration, the bags will already be on the way out, or shortly thereafter.
It depends on what terminal you come into. Many US carriers arrive at Terminal 3. I travel to the UK 2-3 times a year on average (AA or Delta). Checked luggage has been about a 10 -15 wait. British Airways once lost my luggage for a week due to an IT meltdown, so I am always hesitant to check in luggage, but the older I get, the less I feel like lifting 30 pounds up into an overhead bin. So I get why some people want to check luggage.

This has been my experience as well. Sometimes I have time for a quick trip to the loo before they appear, but generally they are right on target.
I wpuld day about 10-15 minutes, barring any meltdown. I did once wait an hour after the luggage belt broke down...
I fly into Heathrow several times a year and my experiences in various terminals is that my checked bag arrives shortly after immigration and the loo and sometimes already there.
Once it was a 10/15 min wait.
In my case it took two weeks to deliver my bag from my departing airport back to my house. It never left Canada... that was British Airways. They SAID they would reimburse me for costs, but haven't. I arrived in London in August. I have no optimism, and will very likely not fly BA again. Sorry, that isn't very helpful to you.
I checked a bag earlier this year (late March) at Heathrow and was able to collect in a very short amount of time; probably around 10-15 minutes as noted above.
