B&Bs in London

I'm looking for a B&B in London. I would consider being just outside the city center, but not too far away as I don't want to spend a lot of money and time on the Tube.

I'm trying to stay under $130 a night if possible. I would also prefer a private bathroom (it does not have to be en suite).

If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. Or if there is a good agency you know of, please let me know. Thank you very much!

P.S. I am finding searching on huge sites a bit overwhelming at the moment. Unless there is a trick to it that I am missing. Yesterday I literally spent hours searching and then checking my finds on tripadvisor, with many disappointments.

A Travelodge or Premier Inn is going to be within you price range, especially if you dont need to be in any tourist hotspots, but even then, you might just manage it.

Nothing fancy, but always clean, warm and all have en-suite and loads of locations.

We absolutely loved our few days at Rhodes Avenue Homestay, in Muswell Hill-cannot say enough good things about it. It's Numero Uno on Trip Advisor, just a smidge over your budget. Their Room 2 has private bath in the hall just outside your bedroom door, Room 1 is ensuite. Both rooms are on the second floor. Ten minute walk to Bounds Green Tube Station, there is a bus that goes to it as well.

On arrival, Elli urged us into his car for the twenty minute nickel tour of Muswell Hill, he took us up to the Alexandra Palace and around the town to orient us and show us a couple favorite restaurants, transport options, etc. Elli and Haya are wonderful hosts!

At today's rates, your $130 is only £85. That doesn't go very far in London, or even in suburban London. If you find B&Bs at that price be extremely careful to check the location and reviews.

I'm surprised then when you filter by price you still get overwhelmed. I wouldn't have expected much to turn up.

Have you considered AirBnb? Sometimes the prices are a bit keener, and at many places you get cooking and fridge privileges which I know are important to you.

Good luck

Dave, Muswell Hill is the home of the Kinks! Of whom I am a big fan.

We recently rented a great apartment in the East End, 3 minutes from the Whitechapel Station (Hammersmith and District lines + overground), for $130/night. Seven nights' minimum stay. We loved it. Fixed our own food which we bought at the large Sainbury's grocery across the street. This is a gated apartment complex in a very safe area. http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p884545#summary

I always book with At Home In London.... www.athomeinlondon.co.uk. As a matter of fact, I will be in London next month and have booked a room in a home in the Belgravia area for £76 single with a private bathroom. I highly recommend them.

Thank you, everyone.

I have checked into a few of the chain hotels and they seem more expensive than I thought they would be. I especially feel cautious when I look at TripAdvisor and a place like Travelodge Waterloo has complaints about mold in the rooms, dirty rooms, etc. Eeek.

I keep searching...! Thanks for the recommendations. I'm sure I will find something.

I just want to second the recommendation for the At Home in London network - we very much enjoyed our stay in August 2008, including great discussions with our hostess about the US presidential election campaign that was underway at the time. I just checked their website, and there are a number of locations in Zones 2 and 3 [Hammersmith, Clapham, Parsons Green, etc] at nightly rates of less than 80 GBP.

And a few years earlier we had a good stay through the London Home to Home network. Again, there are some options there that fit your budget. I enjoyed chatting with our hostess in Chiswick, too.

With both of these, you can just give your dates, budget, and other constraints and they will get back to you with suggestions. Or you can peruse the options and request specific homes, which is what I did.

Don't get discouraged, and have a great trip!
