Where can I get a list of recommended B&B's? Not for London necessarily, but the rest of England. I have a copy of Rick's guide book but don't find a list of b&b's.
Do you mean Rick's recommended B&Bs? They would be in his guide book either in paper forum or as an e-book.
If you've got specific places in mind people might have been there and can make recommendations.
Where do you want to stay? Each local tourist board will have a list of accredited accommodation.
Sawdays.co.uk has some great B&B accommodation. Trip Advisor and Booking.com both have graded accommodation.
There's a "Sleeping" overview in the Appendix of the book. After reading that, circle back to the end of each city chapter to find particular Sleeping recommendations by destination. They're called however their owners name them - hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs, inns, "youth" hostels, etc. Most provide breakfast, unless they are apartments.
In addition to the above suggestions, booking.com is a lodging website that now includes quite a lot of alternative accommodations like B&Bs. You'll find lots of reviews there. On booking.com only people who have actually stayed at a hotel can leave a review, so there's not a lot of junk to wade through. After making a short list of good possibilities, you can Google to find a way to book with the B&B directly or find an email address or telephone number to call.
On our 28 day self drive tour of Wales and England, I used TripAdvisor and Kayak to screen B&Bs by location. Kayak is nice for finding lowest price. TripAdvisor is great to use the map feature and focus on a location where you can walk the city where you are staying. We found many great B&Bs or in a few cases, small hotels. Since we had a car, we booked places that had free or discounted parking.
Here is my review of our trip:

All you have to do is google for example B&B’s in Chipping Campden. Also, there are hundreds of B&Bs that do not advertise because of the cost, they depend only on their sign outside, I’ve had several B&B owners tell me that.
But usually those who do not list on booking.com are on lists for individual towns. I found lodging in some small towns in the Cotswolds that way.
You can get a list from the local tourist board with ratings. We usually picked a "2 whatever icon" that would be a very nice room that was modestly affordable in a heritage house with no ensuite bath because a full bath with a real tub would be just across the hall. Often we were the only ones using that bath anyway. In London we stayed in a townhouse on a garden square that had the bath up a half landing in the back of the house with a private view of lovely tree with birds. Ensuite baths are often just showers and a loo in a closet and you pay more. Just bring a modest coverup and slippers.
Beth, you are right some are listed on TI list, but not all, because they to pay the TI a percentage of each booking.
