Avebury Lodging

After 4 visits to Avebury, I've never actually 'finished' touring the town before my Mad Max tour took us away (LOVED the Mad Max tours!). I intend to return in the Aurumn of 2025 or June 2026, and would like to find lodging there for two or three nights. The listings I can find confuse me as to location and price.

Has anyone a lead on where would be easy, pleasant, and not outrageously costly to stay in the old town? My target locations for the trip are Salisbury/Sarum, Avebury, Tingagel, St Ives or Penzance. I'd be hiring drivers or taking transport, and hope to cover a couple miles by foot daily (I'm well-on in years, and a but tumbly).

Many thanks for any insights, suggestions, location info.

I’m a bit confused by this. Avebury isn’t a town; it’s a very small village and while it’s an extremely pretty place surrounded by the stones, there’s just not that much to explore. There’s not really an “old town” because it’s, well, a small village. You could explore the whole place in half a day including the museum and stones.

There just aren’t that many lodgings within Avebury itself as it’s so small.

Are you planning it as a base for your other locations? It’s close to Salisbury (which has much more selection in terms of accommodations, places to eat and drink etc) but I assume your Cornish destinations form a separate part of the trip?

Hello. In doing research for my own visit to the area, there are some options that come up via Google directly in Avebury. They look tranquil. Have you looked at Marlborough or into Swindon? Also, if you have not come across it yet, the Marlborough manor appears to be closed due to flooding repairs up to 2025 December holidays.

Marlborough is a pretty old town but I can’t imagine it’s well connected by public transport. Swindon is a post-war town and not really of interest for tourists. I think Salisbury would be your best bet location wise.

That depends on your point of view. It's on the #X5 Salisbury Reds Swindon to Salisbury via Amesbury route- roughly every 90 minutes.

Then there is the broadly two hourly #42 from Marlborough to Avebury. That bus goes on to Calne for connections every 30 minutes to either Swindon or Chippenham Railway Station on the #55.
