Avanti West Coast - Potential for Industrial Action from mid August

Just a general heads up that ASLEF (train drivers) are balloting for industrial action on Avanti West Coast- the ballot opens on 10 July.

The ballot opens on 10 July, if the vote is for action then a minimum of 14 days notice has to be given.

Thus there is the potential for strikes, or action short of a strike, from mid August onwards.

Note that as of last weekend the current agreement on Rest Day Working has ended, so there is the potential for short notice cancellations as and from last weekend-27 June.

The rest day working issue is already having an effect. I've had 3 successive trains cancelled this morning, from Carlisle to Warrington, for Chester- due to no Crew.

These were unplanned cancellations as I checked before leaving home at 0645. All three were then scheduled to run, but were cancelled by 0830.

TPE have part rescued the situation, and I have been able to divert via Liverpool, because I am on a flexible ticket, which happened to be substantially cheaper than any Advance ticket.

Given that TPE are covering for two Avanti services between Glasgow and Wigan it is a very quiet train.

So not for the first time flexible tickets have proved their worth.

you can add to this the PLANNED cancellations where Avanti, on instructions from Department for Transport, have removed a lot of trains over the next 6 weeks to save DfT money under the terms of the Covid emergency contract which they are still working to. Although these trains appear in printed leaflets and online PDFs they will disappear from online journey planners without explantion.
