ATMs in Oxford England

Can I get withdraw pounds from ATMs in Oxford England using my U.S. bank debit card that doesn't have a chip in it? I was able to do this in other EU countries in years past but want to be sure now, thanks, Lynn.

Absolutely not a problem, just did this with our CapOnes, which they are not replacing with chips as they are not debit cards.

There are plenty of ATMs in the town, including the station, and they should give you no problem.

Although all ATMs in the UK are chipped and have been for over a decade they do also read magnetic strips. However, if it seems a particular ATM is uncooperative use another; most likely the magnetic reader is out of order and it hasn't been noticed since it rarely gets used.

The above is true provided your debit card and the ATM are accessing the same network.

Lynn,
I used my bank debit card at the ATM in the Marks & Spencer store in Oxford. I liked going to M&S because their ATM is inside the store and I felt very safe getting cash there.

Should work just fine. As mentioned, cards won't work if an ATM doesn't access at least one of the same networks as the card, but that's the same as in the U.S.

You can check with the card issuer to see if they have an arrangement with any UK bank(s) that may reduce fees.
