Asking for separate checks

Hello, this will be the first time that I will be traveling with couples and a single traveler. In England and France is it ok to ask for three separate checks in a restaurant? Thanks.

Usually absolutely OK in the UK but ask to “split the bill “ rather than the check.

in England the only use for a check - spelled cheque - is to write one out to pay a bill or a person, like was done last century.

For at least 20 years very few people use cheques anymore and for very few purposes. Personally, the last cheque I wrote, despite having a supply of them, was at least 20 years ago.

In a restaurant in England you want, as Emma said, the bill. And yes, splitting is done - usually now by apps which allow that. Wagamama has one of the best bill splitters for use in their delicious restaurants.

It’s okay in the UK and it is also okay in France. My family and I sid it multiple times last vacation (last Christmas) in Paris. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Just tell the waiter who is together and paying for what. If you can’t manage it before you order, you can sort it out on the back end, when you ask for “l’addition.”

Very common in both places. But do the wait staff a courtesy by calculating how much each individual owes as they don't carry calculators.

Yep, very common to split the bill in the UK. I’d usually say something like: can we put £20 on this card, £23 on this one, and the rest on this 3rd card. I have never heard of anyone asking for 3 separate bills (checks). I’d suspect it might be possible but will take a while to organise. It’s easier to get the bill, then work out how much each person wants to pay. Tap to pay the amount you want on the handheld terminal that the waiting staff will use.

Some restaurants will ask if you want to do this on ordering, so it’s quite usual.

I’ve noticed on a few restaurant bills recently that there have been suggested amounts for splitting the bill on the bottom, indicating how common it is to do so.
