Four of us are traveling to London in mid-June and are looking at airbnbs near Paddington Station or Kensington. Any suggestions as to which would be a better area. We would like to be within a mile of Paddington.
There are a number of nice quiet side street areas that are within walking distance or a short cab ride to Paddington such as the Craven Terrace area, Lancaster Gate, Queensway. I think the area between the station and Marble Arch is okay too, but I'm less familiar with that triangle.
I cannot speak to Kensington--have only walked through--so I don't know if one is better than the other--probably depends on your itinerary. In short, if you want to be near Paddington, there are plenty of pleasant spots on the Paddington side of the park.
We stayed at a B & B in Kildare Gardens which is a quiet cul-de-sac half way between Notting Hill and Paddington Station. There are several in that area. I don't know if any are airbnbs because this is a pretty established area. Rents would probably be much the same for either type and in reality not much difference in style. Just check the listings on-line and then just google earth map them to see the neighborhood.
When we were in London we stayed in an apartment hotel (not an airbnb) in the Bayswater area, a few blocks from Paddington station. It is a very pleasant and safe area with a variety of ethnic restaurants.
We stayed at a flat on Praed street, between Paddington and Edgware Rd last spring. Praed St itself is shockingly quiet traffic-wise once business & commuting hours are over.
