Are there Tartan items like scarves and bags not made of Wool?

I am extremely allergic to wool but I just love the look of Tartan scarves and shawls but am I hoping against hope that some are made of acrylic ? Thanks for any and all info.

I have the same problem. On my trip to Scotland I found one acrylic scarf in a tartan plaid, but it is short and looks cheap. Hope you have better luck!

In Inveraray there are 2 or 3 nice shops selling traditional Scottish goods, and I noticed that some are acrylic rather than wool. They have scarves and shawls, neckties, sweaters, a few blazers, hats, etc. If you ask the sales staff they can point you to the acrylics versus the woolens.

I'd expect this to be the case in the large cities too. Of course, some are also made in China. Read the labels and caveat emptor.

Clan tartans are available in lovely soft cashmere. I bought several scarves and sweaters for myself and as gifts for my brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. The Edinburgh Woolen Mill shops throughout Scotland have a huge assortment of clan tartans and reasonable prices. Here's their website: https://www.ewm.co.uk/

Unfortunately, cashmere is also wool. It's a tough allergy to have as many don't realize you can be allergic to wool. I had a teacher tell me I was making it up......almost landed in the hospital cause of that jerk.

I hope I won't find too many hotels that use wool blankets. Oh no that would suck.

Cashmere is not wool. Cashmere is from a goat and wool is from from a sheep. This may or may not be important in your allergies, but it is useful to know.

Most hotels will use duvets - blankets of any kind are rare.

"Proper" traditional tartan is made from wool. In the UK, all goods state what they are made of plus washing instructions, so check out all the labels carefully. Staff at shops may be able to help you out, but I suspect that many won't have a clue, so best check the labels yourself.

Most people wanting tartan want the "real thing" ie wool, but there will be acrylic versions around. As others have said, beware of cheap imitations.

I am allergic to wool - or more specifically, the lanolin in sheep's wool, as well as lanolin in moisturisers etc (include some that are recommended for sensitive skin like E45).

Cashmere doesn't contain lanolin, if that helps...

And don't worry - no blankets. Duvets everywhere. However there is one hotel chain (possibly Holiday Inn Express???) that has woollen covers on the little extra cushions on the beds and a kind of woollen sash thing across the bed. I have to pick them up quickly using a corner of my scarf and throw them into a corner of the room so I don't accidentally lean against them.

You are not alone! I, too, am allergic to wool. Cashmere, too (it can come from goats or a kind of rabbit). I never saw any acrylic tartan, but I didn't look for it. I have see tartan plaids done in cotton on-line. You could ask about that. There are plenty of other things with tartan on them that are not cloth- cups, jewelry, plastic items, ink pens, etc. You can also get clan badges, books, calendars, and other items to bring home with wonderful pics and funny jokes, etc. Get a recipe book!!!

I saw one or two tartan scarves available in alpaca instead of sheep's wool. It didn't seem very common, though.
