Are COVID lateral flow self-test kits readily available in England at present?

Hi, I’ll be in England later this month. Are COVID antigen (lateral flow) home test kits readily available for purchase in England, and if so, what do they cost and where would I buy them—at a grocery store or a Boots or other pharmacy? Knowing whether they are in stock will help me decide how many, if any, to pack. I’ll be in Windsor, York, Eastbourne, and London.

When I was in Italy last fall, self-test kits were readily available for 5 euros each at CONAD supermarkets, cheaper than here at home.

Thank you.

They are everywhere.....supermarkets, pharmacies, discount stores, etc. I've seen them as low as just under 2 GBP.

They will be cheaper than in the US.

Your thread made me laugh. I brought 2 tests with me and planned to get some at Kings Cross this morning. Walked in to Boots and yes, big end cap display crammed full. 1 test for 2£. A box of 5 for 9.95£. Easy peasy.

Hmm, I get Covid tests for free here in the US. Hard to be less expensive than that. Have you checked with your insurance provider or local public agencies in your area? I take a few out of the boxes, put them in a small zip lock and pack them in my bag. They take up almost no space. My theory is that if I am experiencing symptoms I am not going to want to be running around trying to fInd one.

I disagree with "they are everywhere" - a larger Boots will sort you out but they certainly don't sell them in smaller branches anymore

I saw them on display at two small Boots a couple of weeks ago.

Sainsbury''s is also selling the 5 test kits at 9.95.

They sell them in my tiny neighbourhood Tesco for £2 each so they really are - if not everywhere - very readily available.

I’ve also seen them at the counter near the till of my local off-licence/newsagent.

I'd disagree with jgdh about tests not available in smaller chemists. They are in my - quite small - semi-rural neighbourhood Lloyds.

maybe jgdh means not their local chemist, perhaps not checking further afield...??

😆😆

At least hopefully the instructions will be in English. I’ve bought in Italy and France and had to look up the instructions on Youtube!

Where are they free in the US - I was putting together an Amazon shopping list for delivery to our first stop in the US - and self-test kits were around $20 on Amazon! I can buy them for $1.30 in NZ!

Test kits are free for Americans. We can order them online and have them sent to us. Sometimes our insurance will also pay for them.
