Anyone have experience with the Dolphin Hotel Paddington?

I am needing to make lodging reservations for my trip to London in September. Many people like the Premier (County Hall, Victoria, etc.) but I ran across the Dolphin, which is definitely "budget". I'm trying to avoid using up my Marriott points, although I might stay at the Airport (one of them) for a couple nights to use it as a base for Windsor.

Requirements are proximity to the tube and a way to get to Heathrow terminal 3, although I used Uber the last time I was in town.

So.... suggestions or reviews welcomed!

Have walked past it.

Why would booking at a Premiere Inn affect your Marriot points?

Do you need an elevator?

What is your budget?

Moving to an airport hotel to see Windsor would be silly unless you’re planning to do it on your last day so that you end up close to the airport. You can get to Windsor from central London, especially if you stay close to Paddington. So it is an easy and not long day trip from town. From an airport hotel you will either need to get into the airport and then out again by bus or plan on a comparatively expensive taxi ride. You will Dave virtually no time.

Like Claudia I’m also at a loss as to why staying at a Premier Inn will cost Marriott miles.

I stated badly. I have Marriott points. Can use them in lieu of having to spend $$$$ on hotel so that was a random statement. Ignore it.

Still haven’t seen any reviews of the Dolphin.

I concur re: using airport as Windsor base (would be last day); logistically annoying.

I’m debating between Victoria or Paddington for location.

If you mean on here, maybe none of the contributors to the forum have stayed there. In general, visitors to London that are regulars on here prefer chain hotels, particularly Premier Inn, in that price range.

The reviews on Google are pretty much what I'd expect for an independent hotel in that budget range; some give it five stars and it worked out fine for them, others have some complaints. It looks like the sort of place where you'd need to be prepared to roll with it if things weren't quite perfect because it's relatively inexpensive. The chains have a degree of consistency maybe that a small independent might not?

I'm not a lover of neighbourhoods dominated by a large railway station. The Dolphin looks to be on a nice quiet square away from the traffic though.

A little further west is nicer, once you head towards Bayswater and Holland Park. On the other side of Hyde Park, the area of South Kensington may have some similarly priced independent hotels, but may be more characterful as a location. You'd just need to pick somewhere that is an acceptable distance from a tube station for you. We talked in another thread about Pimlico as a nicer alternative to Victoria.

There are 899 reviews on TripAdvisor. My normal approach is to start by reading all the three star reviews as they always seem to be the sanest and most balanced!

I would be extremely leery of any London hotel that’s less than about £120 a night as I’ve had some bad experiences, and I don’t personally like the immediate Paddington area, but worth taking a look through these and understand that it really is low-budget for London… https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186338-d192078-Reviews-Dolphin_Hotel-London_England.html
