Any recent visitors to York Minster?

I am wondering if timed entry tickets to York Minster Cathedral are required? I'm not seeing any language on the website to that effect, it appears to just be recommended. We are arriving from the US on Thursday May 5 and will be there 3 nights. I'd prefer not to have a specific time and have a little more flexibility to go when it suits us, however our days there will be Friday and Saturday which means likely more people. I'm wondering if anyone has been there within the past few weeks and might have some thoughts on this.

I am also wondering - do you need a guided tour to see the choir loft? Or is this something that can be easily done with a self-guided tour? A friend who was there years ago said that I need to make sure to get up to the choir loft to see the fun carvings on the choir pews.

Thanks in advance for the assist!

We did the wonderful York Minster tour in October 2017 and loved it. We just showed up in the morning. The tour was quite extensive and we spent over three hours there.

We visited yesterday and had timed passes. However you can walk up and buy passes. The tours vary depending on the guide but you can go into the choir area without a guide.

If you have chance, do attend Choral evenson in the Minster - it is a magical experience. It starts 17.15 but you are let in probably 15 minutes before to get settled in the choir stalls. A queue forms about 30 minutes before by the entrance to the choir. Check at the information desk in the Minster for dertails and information.
