Hello well informed and experienced UK community
I apologize for bringing this up, I know it's been thrown about many times but it appears to be confusing and complex, I think mainly because if it goes wrong your entire trip is in jeopardy. Seems like every time we make a decision about local travel we read or hear something that makes us doubt our plans. And as we get closer, the prices are going up...
Our trip is this summer for three weeks. We have our airfare and rooms all booked. We fly into Gatwick. We started with Rick's plan and modified it to fit our interests. Our first stop is Bath, then Oxford/Cotswolds, Keswick, Durham/Newcastle, Scotland, York and finally London.
It appears to be relatively easy to book trains and cars but it's the unexpected issues that trouble us. For instance, Rick and many of you say to take the train from Gatwick to Bath and get the car there. But we've read that if for some reason your flight is delayed and you miss the train you've pre-booked you are out of luck, no refunds nor can the train ticket be used later.
And we've heard it can be more difficult to pick up the car in Bath especially automatic (first time driving on the left side want to reduce the odds...).
And similar to the train, you book the expected time to pick up the car but if you are late will it be there? Or early can you pick it up?
Then of course is the insurance. We've heard the argument from both sides. Our credit card covers it but the company may still charge us until they are reimbursed for any trouble that occurs with the car which can take months after the trip? I also find that some car companies aren't letting you decline the insurance, at least booking online.
As I write this it just seems unnecessarily complex or maybe I am making it too complex. Our preference is to pick up the car in Gatwick, take our time driving to Bath. Return the car in either York or Newcastle and train to London.
Would love to hear your experiences and thoughts.
Thanks
Steve
