Another 2 for 1 question about train tickets.

We are traveling by train from Dover to London on November 12. Will that train ticket allow me to use the 2 for 1 discounts or do I have to have a return ticket as well?

Also, would you suggest buying the train tickets ahead of time or just show up at the train station? If buying ahead of time, how much time ahead?

Thank you for any advice. I am finding this all confusing....

Oh, we were going to train into London from Dover on November 12 and then train or Gatwick Express to the airport on November 23......would that help?

tickets into London and out of London would qualify for the 2 for 1 vouchers between your given dates - so yes that would work

but that means you need to have your outbound tickets with you when claiming the two for 1s

Ok. That might be worth it. Looking into it asap.

So train in and Gatwick Express out would do it. Right ?

Be aware that 2 train routes operate from Dover to London. Best advice would be to use the High Speed (140 mph) service into St.Pancras. DO NOT put used tickets into slot in ticket gate but tell staff that you wish to retain the ticket as proof of rail travel so as to get the 2 for 1 deals.

James. Great advice. Thank you.

On the return to Gatwick does it matter if we do the 1 hr train or the faster Gatwick Express for this deal ?

Aren't there 3 people in your group? If so, 2 people can enjoy the two for one discounts offered above, the third will be full price. To benefit the most you need multiples of 2.

On the trains you may be eligible for a special discount called Groupsave which gives a 30% discount on multiple tickets for a group of 3 or more who travel together. So, effectively one person nearly travels free out of 3. You need to specifically ask for that discount; it is not available with Advance (with a capital A, tied to a particular train and nonrefundable) tickets usually.

You will have to ask, because different operators handle Groupsave differently.

Nigel....yes we are 3......We figured we would get 4 tickets and pass along the savings to a stranger as a good deed. If not we will only get one set and pay for the 3rd.

I will look into the group price on train travel....thanks for the hint

You won't be able to get 4 tickets at an attraction ( 2 for one twice) unless you have 4 sets of train tickets. Everybody benefitting from the promotion needs to provide valid train tickets for each person.
