Am I trying to jam too much in 2 weeks - england/scotland

I will be arriving London May 12 at 11:30 am and leaving London May 26 at 10:30 am. I am trying to decide if I am jamming too much in. Tentative itinerary

5/12: train to Lake District (have friend there)
5/13-15 Lake District
5/16 - get rental car in Kendal
5/16-5/17 stop somewhere mid-point in Scotland (Oban?? Fort William??)
5/18-5/20 Isle of Skye
5/21 - stop somewhere between Iverness + Edinburg, enjoy the drive
5/22- turn in car in Edinburg
5/23 - Edinburg
5/24 - train back down to London, enjoy 5/24-5/25 in London, leave 5/26 in am??

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

assuming you are flying from another continent (maybe North America or Australia?) that arrival day will really be a L-O-N-G day.

11:30 arrival, 12;30-1:00 out of the airport, 2:00 at Euston Station. 14:30 train to Oxenholme/Lake District arrives 17:10 (don't miss your stop).

How long a day will that be?

Will your friend pick you up at Oxenholme or Penrith?

Pedantic - it is Edinburgh, pronounced somewhat like edin-burra

Have you already got your Skye reservations? Its pretty full now....

Most of your trip is in Scotland. Frankly, you should just so Scotland.

The Lake District is great for the out of doors, like hiking. It is very scenic. Your Scotland trip covers a lot of ground. I suggest that you plan your trip (transportation from point A to B) for each day. Driving in the UK will be slower than in the USA. The more places you plan to visit, the more time you will be traveling.

Hi Howard.Annie -

Well it is a lot, but you seem to have it largely figured out, so go for it.

Recommendations. Agreed, don’t miss your stop at Oxenholme to change to the Kendal train branch line (this is politely saying “don’t nod off” or, if you might, get somebody nearby to give you a nudge as to when to get off). It will seem implausible that the mainline express will stop at such a tiny isolated station, but it is correct! I trust your friend will meet you off the train at Kendal? Especially if travelling onwards?

I further assume you know to book your railway journey in advance - get ‘Advance’ tickets if you can commit to a specifically timed train between London and Oxenholme. Same applies for your return to London from Edinburgh. On all journeys ALWAYS reserve seats where you can (you can’t on Oxenholme to Kendal leg for instance, but on the main line express services you really must).

If not planning to take the ferry to Skye from Mallaig (you’d probably need to have already booked that) then Fort William is your best stop off between Kendal and Skye. Oban is the ferry point to Mull/Iona/Staffa which you won’t have time to do, so while perfectly pleasant, nothing to detain you there. Also Fort William has lots of accommodation - if not booked, may I suggest you get onto that quickly.

And, sorry if this is bad news, but as others have said, if you’ve haven’t secured your accommodation on Skye, then you might struggle at this stage. If all is full, you might try on the mainland within striking distance.

Let us know how you get on. If running into problems we might collectively be able to offer some alternatives.

Can I ask if you have changeable flights? It doesn't make sense to fly into and out of London when most of your trip is N. England and Scotland. If you can change them one option would be to fly into and out of Glasgow with a little foray into the Lake District and leaving London out this time. If London is a must can you fly into Glasgow and catch your friend in the Lake District on your way down to London or vice versa? I feel like you are trying to cover way too much ground.

Might I suggest the Caledonian Sleeper for your trip from Edinburgh to London the evening of May 23, nice way to get there without wasting a day of touring, full day in London.

We're doing the same thing from Glasgow.
