Thanks Jane! We will be in London for 11 days in less than 2 months and actually have been torn whether to do afternoon tea and then where should we have it. My husband rolls his eyes at it, so we may skip it. One thing for sure, not paying 65 euros for it! I’m leaning towards The Pump Room in Bath if we do decide to do it.

Jane, thanks! The first time I was in London over 25 years ago, I had afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason and loved it. It was very reasonably priced, too. I'm sort of with Tammy. I don't know that I could bring myself to spend £65. I'm afraid if I did, I would ingest thousands of calories to recoup the price! 🤣

But Tammy, I would recommend finding one that is reasonably priced - it's well worth it for the experience and taste!

😳 And here I was thinking that £30 at Betty's in York was an extravagance for what you get

diveloonie, the great thing about tea at the Pump room(besides the live music) is that your husband will be able to order from the lunch menu-or at least that was the case when we were there pre-Covid.

OMG..I had Afternoon Tea at Betty's in Harrogate and I could almost not finish it all. I felt like a python who'd eaten a goat (although I know from another thread that Jane is allergic to goat so I'll think of another animal!) I just ate and didn't look at the price, lolol!!

Jane, beautiful looking food! Thank you!

It does not look like it is going to be very filling but yowser...I had to really stuff down that last sweet (and I am ALL about sweets!). PS - pop in to the bakery and buy a Fat Rascal to go for your breakfast the next morning.

Pam, I can't eat sweets either, so where does that leave me?

We just returned from 4 weeks in England and had tea at both The Wolseley and The Pump Room. Both great experiences. The tea at The Pump Room is quite filling. There's a 3-tiered tray with savories on the bottom, scones in the middle, then sweets on top, PLUS a separate tray of sandwiches. :-)

There are some places that serve a savory tea. I’ve not investigated because you know I’m going for the top tier of sweets!

Fortnum and Mason serves a savory tea but it also has desserts.

Sweets all the way! I would kill for a scone with jam and clotted cream right now!

We did the Sweetshop afternoon tea at the Chesterfield Mayfair recently. Yes it was 65 pounds a piece for the adults, less for the grandkids. Yes, it was an extravagance but it was a lot of fun and off the bucket list. From now on I’ll be perfectly satisfied with a cream tea and I also can’t think of anything better than a good scone, English clotted cream and jam at the moment….. Yum!

We do afternoon tea often when we are in the UK, just not at fancy expensive places (definitely not in London) but in small towns and villages. We have tea booked for 8 places so far out of our upcoming 29 day trip. (3 weeks til we leave!!). But then I'm a little obsessed with afternoon tea. I lived in Oxford for a year when I was 18 and never had the chance or the money to experience afternoon tea then and I've been chasing it ever since.

Edited to add: BTW we have tea instead of lunch or dinner not in addition to.
