Afternoon tea in London--The Dorchester? Fortnum and Mason?

We're looking for a place fit for celebrating my mom's 65th birthday while in London in June. I've done some research, and I've read great reviews for both of these places, as well as many others. Any thoughts? The Dorchester appears to have swankier decor, but the china at F&M looks so lovely! Of course, neither is a deciding factor!

For such a special occasion, the Ritz would be perfect. They've written the book on afternoon tea and remain the standard by which all others are judged.

Yes, The Ritz looks delightful, but I don't think my dad will be taking a jacket, which I think is required, according to the website.

I was just looking at the website for the Ritz yesterday, after friends who will be meeting us in London told us they wanted to treat us to lunch there for our anniversary. So very generous. I noticed the dress code, stating no jeans and men must wear jackets and ties. On our almost 6 week trip I can't imagine any other day my hubby would wear a jacket of the sort they require. Breakfast was less strict. They only state no sports clothing or trainers. Looks like we're going for breakfast! :-)

I had tea at the Ritz with 3 of my childhood friends - we wanted a special memory of London.
It was wonderful!!!
We wore nice slacks and a sweater and scarf (nothing fancy) and of course no trainers (we changed our shoes in the loo before entering the tea room.)
It was wonderful and will always be a very special memory.

If you don't want to carry a jacket you can always pop into a Moss Bros and hire one for the day....

That's an interesting idea Nigel. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any idea how much that would cost? Also the times they are open? We will be arriving in London on a Saturday, though I'm not sure yet what time. I can't buy our train tickets until next month. We will be going to the Ritz the next day.

I'd opt for Fortum and Mason and afterwards stroll down Jermyn street (sp?) to the small hidden park adjacent to St. James of Piccadilly. Utterly charming oasis of calm.

The Dorchester has more historical links and connections for Americans.

A jacket starts at £38 for a hire, shops are all over London, they are open 7 days a week (at least at the Covent Garden location) , and the hire is for up to 4 days for that price.
