Afternoon and Evening in London

We are on overnight layover and staying at Terminal 5 Heathrow. We are 3 older women, two of whom have been to major London sites before. Except London Eye.
What would be good neighborhood/area on Tube line from Heathrow, to go to and explore (markets, parks shops, pubs) for the afternoon? We will have dinner in a Pub or casual restaurant and head back to hotel. We are able to walk fair distance but are limited on time. Probably can catch Tube around 2:30 and back to hotel at 9 or so.
Any neighborhood that you suggest we head for? Any restaurants in that neighborhood that you think would be fun?
If we wanted to do the Eye, is the area around it interesting, good for wandering and dining?

For me the London Eye should not be on anyone’s list of major London sites at all - it’s just a big Ferris Wheel. But of course it’s you that’s doing it and not me. What I would say is only do it if the weather is dry and clear.

I would probably take the tube to Tower Hill (Piccadilly line from LHR with a simple change to District line at Hammersmith or Baron’s Court). Then walk over Tower Bridge and walk along the South Bank past Borough Market, the Globe, Tate Modern, National Theatre et al and then the Eye. Finish by walking over Westminster Bridge to Parliament and the tube at Westminster back to LHR. Or all in reverse if you want to do the Eye first.

The South Bank has endless places to rest, eat and drink.

I'm going to suggest something completely different....

Windsor is only a short taxi ride from Heathrow. You can explore the castle, the town, have dinner in one of the pubs and then get a cab back to your hotel.
