My husband and I will be staying in Durham for five days from March 25 (Good Friday) - March 29 visiting my son attending graduate school at Durham University. During that time we would also like to spend a couple of days visiting the sites in and around York. I am thinking of purchasing the 2 day York Pass in advance and would like advice on whether we should focus on Durham and vicinity (Hadrian's Wall, Beamish Museum etc.) Easter weekend and wait until Monday and Tuesday to visit York area, or vice versa? We will be traveling via rental car.
Good Friday AND Easter Monday are both holidays in England.
Tourist places will be open, most shops will be open. But it will be busy since it's a holiday.
While you're close by, consider a visit to Ampleforth Abbey north of York. I had the pleasure of spending last summer in Ampleforth village, and the abbey and grounds are spectacular. Originally built by the monks 500 years ago.... google it. I think you'll be impressed and the drive up from York is just lovely!

If you're going to be in Durham anyway I would focus on the stuff around there and leave York for the latter end of your trip. Durham's a lovely city with lots of history, and is compact so doesn't require a lot of time to explore. Beamish is an excellent choice too, but if you're going up to the Roman Wall it's an hour-and-a-bit's drive to somewhere like Housesteads, not counting traffic you might encounter (as it's a Bank Holiday weekend attractions and as a result roads could be busy). It's not an unmanageable journey, I'm just warning that it's a bit further than you might think.
Both Durham and York will be busy throughout your time there, as the schools are on holiday. Easter Sunday means that all shops over 3,000 sq ft must close by law. Cafes and restaurants will be open.
Keep in mind that many museums may be closed for Easter weekend. If they are closed and the weather is good, a hike along Hadrian's Wall is unforgettable. Start at the Steel Rigg trailhead near the Twice Brewed Pub--it has the best section of restored wall.
Many thanks to each of you for your terrific advice which is so very helpful. I think this Travel Forum is fabulous!
