Advice for Family Trip to the Uk - Day TripTours VS Self Guided Visits

My parents, in late 70s, want to take a trip to the UK and to take me, mid 40s, and my niece and and nephew, 19 & 17, at the end of August into second week of September. I need advice on best way/s to see the Scottish Highlands, mine and the kid's request, and then after they are gone covering sights outside of London. My dad is set on day tours but at their age 13 hour tours are a hard NO for my mom. And after a recent accident, I don't think I will be able to handle that either. I am open to taking train trips and/or renting a car and driving, me being the driver. ADVENTURE. So it comes down to what would be that best options for us if we make London the base and want to visit places like Cambridge, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Canterbury, Cotswolds, Dover, Bath? English lit majors all 3 of us ;) I am open to moving home base away from London if it helps. Current dates for trip are August 22 - September 10. No set budget but lets say conservative with some leeway for 3 ppl. I understand parking in big cities is an issue but further out in the countryside, is it still a problem? Based on past experiences I am just trying to figure out how to make this trip easy and stress free for everyone. Happy to answer any more questions. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I m taking my parents in late 70s to UK 8/28-9/13, without teenage niece and nephew though. Here is my high level plan if it's of any use to you:
day 1-7 London ( 5 days in the city and 2 days for day trip from London); day 8-9, move base to Oxford for Oxford and Cotswold; day 10-11, move base to Peak District for Peak District and Chatsworth; day 12, move based to York (I allocated too little time here. you may want to avoid this mistake); day 13-15, move base to Edinburgh.
Hope this is helpful.
