Advice for Cotswolds- Short

Hi all,

We need to travel from the US next week to Bath for a funeral. While there, we would like to explore the Cotswolds. We will have two days (one night), April 19 - 20 which falls on Good Friday. Questions: Should we rent a car or just do public transport? Which is the best village to stay for that night? Should we book a tour or (if we have a car) drive ourselves?

Thanks for any guidance.

I wrote this resoponse before noticing the April dates. Just in case that was a major typo, I'm posting this anyway.

Others have more experience in that area than I do, but I offer this partial info from the perspective of someone who sticks to public transportation:

There is at least one company, MadMax, running Cotswold tours from Bath. I think it is mentioned on Rick's book. At least two companies (GoCotswolds and Secret Cottage) run tours from Moreton-in-Marsh, which is a very short train ride from Oxford. I was happy with my GoCotswolds tour, which got me to a bunch of small towns that could not possibly have been covered in one day by public bus. As far as I know, all the companies I've mentioned use vans rather than big tour buses.

Moreton-in-Marsh is the only Cotswold town with a train station. I believe it is the bus hub for the area. Without a car and without depending on tours, it might be the most convenient place to stay for self-guided touring of the Cotswolds. I think a combination of a one-day tour plus a day on your own doing a bit of village-to-village walking would be a nice compromise if the weather cooperates.

I'm confused.

I'm sorry you need to travel for a funeral.

Your dates confuse me. You posted this question today, and it is July. You refer to going next week, in April, on Good Friday.

Are you actually planning for next year, and the funeral was part of a copy and paste which strayed into the question? Or are you really coming in a few days, in mid-July, and the Easter week reference crept in by mistake?

The best answers will be based on a slightly clearer question.

I understand that if you are traveling for a funeral at the last minute things can be confused. Please clarify your question though.

Is this time to be in conjunction with the boat trip in Wembley?

Rick Steves guide, Great Britain has a great plan for a day to visit the Cotswolds. You can't quite see all, but most of the Cotswolds in a day. Best to rent a car.

If not, take a tour. Tours are very expensive. Not sure the impact of Good Friday will be. It might be hard to find a tour?
