Advice for 2-3 day side trip to the Cotswolds? And where to pick up a rental car?

We will be making our third trip to London this July and would like to rent a car and visit the Cotswolds area this time.
I just booked a room for 2 nights (Tuesday and Wednesday) in Stow on the Wold, to be our base. We could return to London on Thursday or find somewhere else in the region to visit for another day (Stratford-upon-Avon or Warwick or ???)

I just realized that we don't have to rent the car in London. We could take the train (or bus) to Oxford and rent it there. Or maybe even closer? Does anyone have advice on where would be the best location to rent a car for a Cotswolds trip?
And anywhere nearby to spend an extra day?

(FYI, we traveled by trains on our 2 previous trips. In summer 2013, we visited London, Bath, Oxford, York and Edinburgh. In January 2015, we visited Bath again and took day trips to Brighton and Hampton Court Palace.)

You said, "We could return to London on Thursday or find somewhere else in the region to visit for another day (Stratford-upon-Avon or Warwick or ???)"

You are on the right track there. Both Stratford-Upon-Avon and Warwick are great places to visit. Stratford-Upon-Avon of course has all the buildings associated with Shakespeare; New Place, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried, etc. It has the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where you can see a play if you are there the right time of year. Stratford-Upon-Avon is also a great place to take a long stroll, walk by the river, or have a good lunch in a pub. I was just there in May, and wished I could have spent 2 or 3 more days there.

If I were you, I would also go to Warwick. Warwick Castle is amazing. The town of Warwick near the castle is also interesting.

We did not have a car during our visit in May. But both Stratford-Upon-Avon and Warwick are on the train line from Oxford.

We stayed in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and took a small mini bus tour from there to the Cotswolds. This ended up being a really efficient and hassle-free way to see the Cotswolds. With someone else doing the driving, we got to see more than we could have done ourselves with a car.

The company we used was the "Go Cotswolds" Tour, hosted by Tom. We were picked up at our hotel in the morning by Tom and his mini-bus.

We went to Chipping Campden, Broadway Tower, Stow-On-The-Wold, Bourton-On-The-Water, and the Rollright Stones, to name a few of the stops. Tom gave out walking maps in some of the towns, and made recommendations for shops selling coffee and cakes, or lunch. Plenty of time was given for us to walk around and take photos at each stop. Tom runs tours of the Cotswolds on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. ("Go Cotswolds" Tour is highly rated on TripAdvisor, and has just received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2016.)

I would give some thought to either 1. contacting Tom and making arrangements for him to pick you up at your Stow hotel, OR
2. changing your hotel reservation to Stratford-Upon-Avon and going from there. This is the best way to see the Cotswolds without a car, in my opinion.

If you have a car, and prefer to do that way, that's great. But we did not want the hassle of reserving the car, picking up the car, finding our way around the countryside just for one day tour of the Cotswolds. If we had been staying in the Cotswolds for a week, that would have been different. We would have probably rented a car. For our needs, the mini bus tour plus the rail line going through Stratford-Upon-Avon and Warwick was the easiest and most hassle-free (i.e. relaxing) for us.

FYI--We saw several car rental places in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Just wanted to add...The easiest way to see Warwick. If you are traveling from London to Stratford-Upon-Avon, get off the train at Warwick Station. Warwick Castle is walking distance from the station. Baggage storage is available at Warwick Castle. When you're done seeing the castle and walking around the small area near the castle, hop back on the train and continue to Stratford-Upon-Avon. Many hotels In Stratford-Upon-Avon are walking distance from the train station. Our hotel was 6 blocks from the station.

Warwick and Stratford-Upon-Avon are not far from one another; especially easy to travel between the two by rail.

Thank you for the replies.

It sounds like there are MANY wonderful places to visit, close to the Cotswolds. I think Stratford-upon-Avon sounds especially nice.

You have shown me ways we could do this without a car ....

But yesterday I booked lodging in Stow on the Wold, and I like the idea of exploring the Cotswolds by car, using Stow as our base for 2 nights. We would need a car to get there, and driving in the area actually sounds like fun (although the idea of operating a stick shift with the left hand is daunting).

We will leave London on Tuesday and return there by Friday evening. From your comments and the map, it appears that Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Reading are possibilities that we could get to easily from London and also drive a car from there to Stow on the Wold.

Any feedback on those? Or others?

I would definitely get a car for the Cotswolds. Though it's doable without one, you'll miss a lot of the small, idyllic towns which are the highlight of the area, in my opinion. I love Stratford-upon-Avon - very charming town and I love Shakespeare, so that was a must for me. Warwick Castle is also fantastic. I also recently went to Blenheim Palace (where Winston Churchill was born), which was quite nice and will be close to you.

For the rental car, you can either grab one at Heathrow (as you'll already be out of the city proper), or the next logical place will be Oxford, or go all the way through the Cotswolds to Cheltenham. Just depends how far you want to travel on public transport.

Using the information I learned here, we decided we want to spend some time in Stratford upon Avon, in addition to the Cotswolds

Using the information I learned here, in another thread here, and in a 2015 thread, I decided that we should rent a car in either Banbury or Stratford-upon Avon. (Getting to Heathrow would be expensive and nothing new, and Oxford sounds like a stressful beginning to shifting with the left hand while driving on the left.) Trains to both Banbury and Stratford uA leave from London Marylbone and cost about the same.
I chose Stratford uA because it seems more interesting to spend extra time in. Round trip trains at convenient times on Tuesday and Friday totalled £38.30 for both of us. Since we already have lodging in Stow on Wold for Tues-Wed, I just need a room in Stratford uA for Thursday.

6 hours ago I felt overwhelmed by all the options, but now I feel good about this leg of the trip.
Thanks.
