Advance Train Tickets for the Last Train

My family and I will be taking a train from York to London. I’m looking at taking the final train of the day (19:00 train) to maximize time for that day in York. I want to buy advance tickets as the cost is so much less expensive! Should I worry about taking the last train of the day? It’s on a weekday. Are cancellations common? I don’t want to be stranded, but if the system is typically reliable, I won’t give it a second thought!

Since you know with assurance which train you wish to take, what's the downside to buying tickets in advance?

No downside in that respect. I’m just asking for the reliability part of things. Where I live, it’s not uncommon for reroutes, delays, cancellations, etc. Not sure if that’s the same in England as well. The upside to not taking the last train is that there would be a “cushion” to take the later train if something happened.

Ah hah! Never mind. Thank you Emma. I must have been looking at a different website earlier that didn’t show later trains, or maybe I didn’t click next. Thought it was odd there were only about 5 or 6 trains listed that route for the whole day.

Thanks!

Usually there is maximum possible effort not to cancel the genuinely last train of the day (sometimes cancelling the penultimate one instead!) because of this term in the Conditions of Carriage:

28.2. Where disruption prevents you from completing the journey for which your ticket is valid and is being used, any Train Company will, where it reasonably can, provide you with alternative means of travel to your destination, or if necessary provide overnight accommodation for you.

Although 'reasonably can' is a little weasel phrase, it is a situation which is tried to be avoided.
