Adding Hotel Number to Contacts

I am in the homestretch here and I want to add the phone number of my hotel to my contacts.

Here is the number with the four last digits x'd out

+44 (0) 20 7723 xxxx

so do I add the phone number exactly as is to contacts

And remind me. I hold down the zero to get the plus sign. Correct?

my provider tells me that i already have international set up nd it is a very reasonable charge per minute. Something like 5 cents a minute with unlimited free texts.

EDIT: I figured out how to get the plus sign

If you’re using a US phone, either from the US or within the UK, Enter it as +44207723xxxx. The +44 is the code for the
Uk and 207 or 208 are the codes for London. The last 7 digits are the hotel’s number.

However, if you ever need to dial the hotel’s number in the UK from a UK phone, you would just use 020 7723 xxxx.

BostonPhil, who is your provider? And what are they charging for data? That will be different than what they are charging for phone calls (and your price for phone calls doesn't sound bad).

You may want to add the WhatsApp. app to your phone.
A lot of people, hotels, hosts use it to communicate.
You use it for free with wifi, and you can also talk over it to other WhatsApp users.
It works very well.

Hi Mardee

My provider is Spectrum Mobile which you may not be familiar with in your area of the world. I think Charter owns them and once upon a time, I think they may have been Time Warner.

I was told that I pay 5 cents a minute to London and 7 cents a minute to Portugal which are the only two places that I am concerned about. Not bad if it is accurate.

My regular monthly rate is only $14. a month and I get unlimited phone and texts but I only get one gig of data on my plan. There is a catch. I only get this rate if I have internet with them as well and I do but my internet is only $30 a month for now (I qualify for one of the government programs)

I do not know what I would have to pay for data because I do not plan to use data on my phone. I have my iPad which I can only use with wi fi but will stick with my iPad.

I am assuming that it will be easy to access free wi fi at my hotels in London and Lisbon as well as all over these cities.

I have limited wi fi on my ship but not a lot. NCL gives us some free wi fi but it is skimpy because they want us to buy it. I will have enough wi fi to post some pictures and read and send a few emails.

I shut down my phone and put it in the safe when I board the ship and do not bring it up again until the cruise is over. If you get so much as one text message (and it can be junk) while on the ship, you pay outrageous international rates.

I have butterflies Mardee. I have worked on this cruise for over a year and now it is right around the corner.

Thank you S J

I am familiar with What's App and think that I may have tried it once but did not fully understand it.

I believe that it is made by Google and my phone is an Android but I wonder if I can download it on my iPad. I only have wi fi with my iPad but it is probably going to be easily accessible in London and Lisbon.

Hi Bostonphil:
As far as I know , WhatsApp only works on phones for most people.
I have always had Android phones, and it works just fine there.
I use it a lot to talk to friends in the UK from here.
Get a few people you know at home to put it on their phones before you leave, so you can practice before you travel.
It’s very easy!
You can only use it to call other people who also have the app.

However, if you get a new phone number/SIM card in Europe, you will have to change the app to make the calls from the new number.
I think you just “re-invite“ people to the new number, then do it again in reverse when you get home, if you still want to use it at home.

I’m excited for you that that your trip is nearly here!

On WhatsApp, it is a Facebook product, but can be used across all platforms. It does work on iPads and laptops/desktops, but I've only ever used it on there for text and voice messaging, not for calls.

@SJ - If you're using a different SIM (ie a UK SIM) there is no need to re-register or change the WhatsApp number - it will still work, and your contacts don't need to make any changes. I regularly switch SIMs when traveling and have never had to change numbers. WhatsApp is not dependent on what mobile network you're using - it registeryout number once when first installed, and that's it.

As other have noted, WhatsApp is widely used in the UK and I find most people have it, so handy for calls to mobiles, but for calling landlines such as hotels, you will need to make a normal phone call, or use a VOIP platform.

I am going to try What's App. Does it count against my data?. I only have one gig of data which can be used up fast if you are watching videos..

I am going to download it on my phone as well as my iPad.

Yes, i am excited about my cruise, around the corner. I feel like I have everything under control but I do keep thinking of other things that I need to do.

I will be posting reviews from London and Lisbon if I am able to from my iPad.

To add to your earlier question, yes WhatsApp counts as data usage (although some networks have free allowances for WhatsApp data, so worth checking with your provider).

Unless something has changed very recently you won't find an official Whatsapp app for your iPad. I certainly have never seen one. It works on iPhones and android phones and some tablets.

And I absolutely live on WhatsApp.

Nigel is correct.
There are apps that look like WhatsApp, for iPads, but I’m not sure they are.

You can also talk on Messenger on IPad; and if you are from the US, on google-fi, I believe.
Also on Skype and FaceTime.
All on wifi, and WhatsApp on wifi too.
