Accommodations in The Cotswalds and Cambridge

We’re planning a driving trip from Windsor to the Cotswald area then on to Cambridge in early September. Upon arrival at Heathrow we plan on staying in Windsor for one night then driving on to the rest. We’d really like to be able to spend the night wherever we feel like stopping but I’m concerned about room availability on a night by night basis. Thoughts on that?

I might make online reservations for the Cotswolds as it is a very popular area to visit all year round.

The days of booking up on the move are long past. Most people now plan and book accommodation well in advance. You no longer see B&B vacancy signs outside private houses. Early September is still a popular time for holidays.

You may end up spending (wasting) a lot of time chasing accommodation each day and may also end up driving a long way to somewhere that isn't ideal...

We stayed at the Volunteer Inn in Chipping Campden. Reasonable rates and spacious rooms. Has the best pub in town.

We really enjoyed 3 nights at The Chestnut BnB in Bourton-on-the-Water. It was very comfortable, clean and delicious breakfast. Great location. While a tourist favorite, the place was empty by about 4 p.m. and in the morning so we could wander like it was ours.
In Chipping Campden we loved the Noel Arms, which we had for one night.
