This may be way off what you are looking for, but have you considered staying at Leeds Castle 6 miles from Maidstone? It looks extravagant, but it is budget friendly and the best part is you get to walk around the castle grounds after hours. Prices for B&B (June 2022) were $140.00 a night which included entry into the castle during the day and breakfast. The service and restaurant are excellent. Without a car, you will need to take the train from London Victoria to Bearsted (1 hour 9 mins). You can call a taxi service for pick up. The only problem will be that you will not be in town but if you don't decide to stay there, then perhaps do a day trip - its beautiful. https://leeds-castle.com/

Canterbury is a lot nicer. There are 16 direct trains from there to Maidstone per day. But of course, it can be touristy (for good reason, it is a great place). B and B's abound. Maidstone is an administrative centre. Not many tourists!
