Accommodation base for Yorkshire Dales to see Herriot and Beatrix Potter

Hi Everyone,
I plan to spend 2 nights in the Yorkshire area of England. While there I'd like to see both the Beatrix Potter house and Herriot country. Just wondering where the best place to spend my nights are so that I'm not driving hours to get to either place? Is there somewhere kind of in the middle?
Thanks!

We stayed in York, which we loved, and took a short train ride to Thirsk to see James Herriot's (his real name was James Alfred Wight) house in Thirsk. It was beyond wonderful and well worth a couple hours if you're interested in seeing it.

Hawes in Wensleydale is equidistant between the two and has some b&bs.

As usual Richard has come up with a cracking recommendation in Dent. You could also consider Ingleton as well. A bit bigger place, but handy for routes through the Dales and to the Lakes, where you'll find Beatrix Potter's house at Sawrey.

For Hilltop, the first farm Beatrix Potter bought in the Lake District, you should stay at the Tower Bank Arms. I know you are looking for something in between there and the Dales but if you want to really get a feel for the Lake District it's a wonderful place to stay! It's directly adjacent to Hilltop and Beatrix Potter used the pub as one of the illustrations in her book about Jemima Puddleduck. They only have a few rooms but they are really nice and the pub is a very traditional dating back to the 1600s. Their food is excellent, the owners are friendly, and the area is beautiful for walking.

I stayed in Richmond and found it quite centrally located. I had a car and none of the drives were too long. One day I did a drive to Hawes and up through the Butter Tubs pass. It was probably close to route on the google maps link. I also went to Bolton Castle. I wish I'd explored Richmond itself a bit more.
