Accessible Public Transportation Options from LHR

I am a 73-year-old lady. I have no specific mobility issues, but I am very short (5 feet tall). I will have a suitcase with wheels and a medium-size duffel bag that attaches to the handle of my suitcase, plus a fanny pack (bum bag).

Question 1: I will arrive at Heathrow on Wednesday, April 30, at 12:50 pm. My hotel is Premier Inn Waterloo, Westminster Bridge, 85 York Road. I want to take public transportation from LHR to Premier Inn Waterloo. If I take the Underground, I will need to change lines at an accessible station. I would appreciate any routing suggestions or other information that may be relevant.

Question 2: I am returning to the U.S. on a flight that departs from LHR on Friday, June 6. The night prior to my departure (Thursday, June 5), I am staying at the Premier Inn at Terminal 4, where I have stayed before. The last few days of my UK trip I’ll be staying at the Premier Inn County Hall, Belvedere Road. I want to leave P.I. County Hall and travel to LHR on Thursday June 5 around 2 pm. Can I simply reverse the directions provided in response to Question 1 above? If not, please explain.

Here's the TFL map for step free access. I think your best option is to take the Elizabeth Line to Bond Street and change for the Jubilee Line southbound to Waterloo. The southbound Jubilee line platform has a boarding ramp if the step up into the train is too much. The Jubilee line is frequent so you can take a look to see if you need the ramp and if it's too big of a step you can ask a member of staff to get the ramp for the next train.

To get to the airport you would reverse the journey (northbound Jubilee line to Bond Street; change for an airport-bound Elizabeth line). The northbound Jubilee line platforms don't need the ramp so you should be able to get off the train there just fine.

You’ve gone to London before and I’m going assume used the Underground.

From LHR take the Piccadilly Line to Green Park and change to the Jubilee Line to Waterloo. Exit at Waterloo station and stroll to the PI.

Thank you Jeff. I had not considered the Elizabeth line. I will have to check out the cost compared to the Underground.

Thank you Claudia. You've provided a second option for me to consider. It's always good to have a backup plan.

I was in London in May of 2024, and took the Elizabeth Line into Central London from LHR (to Tottenham Court Road). It was about 14 GBP, compared to the the Underground (Picadilly Line) was just under 6 GBP (using the Oyster Card). For reference, the Heathrow Express fare alone is 25 GBP, plus the transit fare from Paddington Station (where the H. Express terminates) to your hotel. I can't speak to the step free nature of the Underground stations you would need to connect to from the Elizabeth Line, but the Elizabeth Line itself is step free and easy to navigate with rolling luggage. I personally am about 5'2, and had a carry on sized wheeled suitcase and a small duffle bag.

Thanks Izzy. The cost difference is not that much for me. I'm more concerned about accessibility.

Hi again. My plane leaves tomorrow for London. I clicked on the link for step free access and have a question. I've decided to take the Piccadilly line from LHR to Green Park and transfer to the Jubiliee line to Waterloo. For the Waterloo station, the map says: "For level access leaving the train at Green Park or Wembley Park, please travel in the correct carriage." Does anyone know what the term "correct carriage" means? How will I know what is the correct carriage?

The easiest route (all covered by TfL fares) is Bus #285 from Heathrow Central Bus Station or #490 from Terminals 4 and 5, to Feltham Railway Station.
There it is level access to board a South West Trains service direct to Waterloo main line station.

Thank you, Marco. I appreciate the information.

isn31c: My flight arrives at Terminal 3. I found a map of the airport and it shows that I would have to walk 0.4 miles to get to the Heathrow Central Bus Station. It looks like that is a windy road outside and I suspect it would be difficult to manage with my luggage. Do you know if there's a shuttle service to that Bus Station?

"Do you know if there's a shuttle service to that Bus Station?"

There isn't a shuttle service - one is not necessary. The bus station is directly above the tube station, and it's an underground walkway from the terminal, so you don't need to worry about the cold and wind. Just follow the signs.

It is a 15 minute or so walk, but it's all indoors, with lifts between levels.

Thank you, Simon. That's a relief. I can stop stressing about that and go back to packing.

with a little effort you can get all around all of the terminals and in between at Heathrow with no stairs and all (virtually all) indoors.

There is lots and lots of signage - one thing they are not lacking...
