A few questions about our London stay

DH and I will start our Oct Europe trip with 5 days in London before heading over to Paris on the Eurostar. It's been more than 10 years since our last visit and a lot has changed.

  1. Can we buy Oyster cards at Heathrow after we've cleared customs and gotten our luggage?

  2. How much to put on the card for 5 days? I think most of our travel will be in zones 1-2, except for one day, which brings me to:

  3. We (well, OK, I) want to visit the WB Harry Potter Studio tour. Does the Oyster card cover travel that far out, or do we need to also buy a rail ticket?

  4. Because we want to take the early Eurostar, I'm thinking of getting a hotel near St. Pancras station. I've seen the Premier Inns mentioned favorably on other threads, and I see there are 3 of these close by. Any comments on these and which is better for easy access to both that station and the Tube?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

  1. Yes
  2. I'd start with £25 each
  3. You can use your Oyster Card to take the Overground from Euston station to Watford Station
  4. I don't have any suggestions for hotels near St Pancras

Joel, thank you so much for the info. I appreciate it. Now hoping someone can help with Question 4.

Any of the nearby Premier Inns are fine. They're clean, consistent hotels with very comfortable beds and friendly staff. No amenities like concierge or room service, but very pleasant. Very popular with families so breakfast can be a bit noisy.

The St Pancras and Euston Premier Inns are literally about a block apart on busy Euston Road; the Kings Cross PI is up a slightly quieter street, but I think some rooms in the hotel have internal/lobby windows so I don't like it as much. If air conditioning is important to you, check the hotel has it. It's not a matter of course in London, but this is a noisy area so you'll probably not want to be hurling your windows open like us Brits do.

It's a busy but well-connected area to stay - near Bloomsbury for the British Museum, near the British Library - and every bus and tube line you could possibly need.

Other hotels to look at - higher budget, but the Pullman is good and I've heard good things about the Megaro.

Alternatively look at some of the older style hotels in Cartwright Gardens, a quiet street near St Pancras that has a number of well-priced hotels - although as older-style properties they tend to lack lifts and aircon.

I've stayed at the Premier Inn opposite St Pancras and I was pleasantly surprised (I'm a hotel snob!).

I've also stayed at the Renaissance in the station and that was very nice.

I've stayed at the Premier Inn St. Pancras directly across the street from the British Library.

I enjoyed my stay. My room was directly on Euston Road but with the windows closed it was totally quiet. I heard no traffic noise at all. You need to take the elevator one flight up to the lobby. Nothing fancy but clean, comfortable rooms, decent wifi, plenty of cable channels and a tea/coffee maker. No phone in the room so if you need to make calls make sure you have a cell.

A 5-7 minute walk to the Eurostar.

CJean,

A quick look at TripAdvisor and HolidayLettings shows there are numerous reasonably priced 1 bedroom apartments in the St Pancras/Kings Cross area. For five nights, an apartment would be more comfortable.

Thank you all for your hotel suggestions and comments. They've been very helpful. I'm trying to be quite budget conscious (about CAD 200/night) because we'll be travelling for 4weeks in total. And balancing that with a pair of arthritic knees that need proximity to transport and elevators where possible. It's a juggling act. I think we'll end up booking one if the Premier inns.

The Kings Cross area is not fully gentrified, so before booking any holiday let in the area I would suggest a thorough exploration on Google Streetview and if it looks even faintly dodgy don't bother.
