Will spend a day in Ely at end of September and apart from the cathedral, of course, what is worth a visit? Cromwell’s house? Ely museum? Wonder if anyone has any other suggestions ?

I haven't been there yet. We will be there in May27. On my list besides the cathedral (including the Stained Glass Museum) is riverside walks, The Jubilee Gardens and possibly the Ely Museum. I will be following this thread to see what others suggest.

I've been there by bus (but am not sure the bus still runs), otherwise it's a taxi from Littleport (the next station towards Kings Lynn).
Kings Lynn is only 35 minutes by train from Ely- and is quite an interesting Hanseatic port town to visit- https://www.visitwestnorfolk.com/destinations/kings-lynn/
The Royal estate at Sandringham is only 20 minutes by hourly bus from Kings Lynn- https://sandringhamestate.co.uk/
Another place worth going to is the National Trust Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve- a short taxi ride away or use the Tiger on demand bus at £2.50 per person. Learn about the fans and see Highland Cattle as an added extra.

I used to visit Ely regularly when I lived in that area a few years back. The Ely cathedral is beautiful. Ely is a very pleasant little town and it is fun to explore the historical center on foot, lots of little shops and tearooms or restaurants. Go down to the riverside. You can often see the narrowboats on the water and there are lots of restaurants and some antique shops down there. By the way, there is a train station in Ely. If you have a car and are exploring the area, Kings Lynn and Sandringham are not too far away. Another favorite in that same general area is Oxburgh Hall, a pretty National Trust property.

Ely is lovely. The cathedral can take most of your day, especially if you join one of the tours. I haven't visited Cromwell's house but it looked interesting. We liked walking down along the river. We had a nice lunch sat in the garden of the Prince Albert- it might still be warm enough by end of the month.
