9 days in England itinerary questions

Good morning all!
Planning early sept trip and have a few things to hammer out

Will be solo for first part of trip
Day 1 Heathrow bus to Oxford. walking tour
Day 2 Oxford (just planning to wander see more sites. Possibly bus to Blenheim palace)

Day 3 train to Bath. Walking tour.
Day 4 Bath
Day 5 bath (mad max Cotswolds tour booked)
Day 6 Bath

I love Jane Austen, so will see prior park, and the Austen center. also will probably spend time at the spa.

For one of the free days, I just cannot decide if I should take the other mad max tour to Stonehenge, Avebury and more Cotswolds
Take a half day tour just to Stonehenge
Or—take a train to Cardiff for the day…just over an hour, and I’ve never been to Wales.
I’m open to any ideas, as I have 4 nights here!

Day 7 train to London (meet up with 27 year old niece, her first time)
I’ve got this schedule packed out.

On Saturday we want to go visit Windsor castle and also go to the portobello rd market and explore Notting hill. Just not sure which should be morning and which afternoon. I don’t want to rush Windsor.

Has anyone done the Sunday Choral matins service at St. Paul’s? Was thinking this would be a good way to see it and hear wonderful music.

We are staying close to paddington station so getting around should be easy.

Also looking for Sunday roast restaurant recommendations

Think we locked in The wolesley for afternoon tea on our first day

Thank you so much for any recommendations

You need to go to Portobello Market first thing on Saturday. Then you can have the rest of the day at Windsor.

I think Portobello Market and Windsor in the same day is a bit much.
If Windsor is the more important, do that in the morning and see if you have time for the market later.

There are three sung services on a Sunday at St Pauls - if you want to hear the most music, Sung Eucharist is the one.
There is also choral evensong every evening - I have actually been part of a guest choir singing this.,

Westminster Abbey has a similar programme.

Windsor is a full day….visit the castle - so much to see there - StGeorges Chapel, the State Rooms, the grounds. It’s huge and spread out. A walk over the pedestrian bridge brings you to Eton with its ancient school. Walk along the Eton side of the river for the best panoramic view of the castle. Another great view of the castle is from the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. A pub lunch by the river would be nice.

If you have the time do the full day trip to the Cotswolds. I happen to prefer Avebury stone circle to Stonehenge. It is the largest of the many stone circles in Europe, and unlike Stonehenge you can wander at will through the circle, touching the stones. It’s interesting to visit the two in the same day and compare them. They are very different from each other.

Don’t want to rush Windsor? Then don’t schedule Notting Hill and the Portobello Road Market on the same day.

If you visit Windsor and visit the castle, you would be remiss to not take the charming walk into Eton, across the Thames (look at all the swans!) and along the high street to Eton College.

Then maybe Notting Hill, Portobello Road Market. Kensington High Street, Kensington Gardens, and Kensington Palace as another day.

For Sunday roast, you cannot beat The Harwood Arms in Fulham. It has a Michelin star! I am not even a huge roast fan, and I love this place.

Roast in Borough Market also gets top marks, but I have not eaten there. I only mention it because many friends have, and they rave about it.

I agree with others here that Windsor is best as a full day trip.

If you love Jane Austen, you could use your free day to go to Winchester. She is buried in the cathedral there and her home in Chawton is just outside of town. It looks like it's about an hour on the half on the train from Bath so not sure if that's too far for you for a day trip.

For Sunday roast, one of my favourites is the Dove in Hammersmith, or if you don't mind heading up to Hampstead there are some great places up there (like Holly Bush or Bull and Last). Sunday roast plus a walk in the Heath is a lovely way to spend a Sunday.

Good luck with the rest of your planning!

Thank you all, good info!

Regarding Windsor, Unfortunately we only have 3 days in London
Don’t want to go on our arrival day (she’s flying in from US overnight, and I’m coming from Bath)
Saturday is best day, but also the day of the portobello market, which my niece wants to go to
Sunday St. George’s chapel is closed, and I want to see that.
We have a 3 pm flight on Monday, can’t do it then, lol.

CatVH, I do want to stroll on the hampstead health, haven’t been out that way…so will look into those recommendations ….
