7 hour layover at Heathrow

We arrive LHR at 12:45 and leave at 19:45 for Zurich. Any advice for a quick side trip to London or maybe Windsor? There will be 4 of us..Just hoping to kill some time there. Thanks everyone.

Windsor would be my vote. Easier to get to from Heathrow. Take a taxi and you are there in no time. Someone will be around to tell you which buses to take to get there but with limited time, I'd suggest splurging and taking taxi.

You'll have time to visit the castle, walk around town and even have a leisurely late lunch at one of the local pubs.

You could go into London but you will only have a total of about two hours max when you include travel time, time to get through immigration, and time to get through security and walk to your gate on your return.

Are your flights all on one ticket i.e. will your bags be transferred between flights? If so that will give you a bit more time.

You can reckon on getting from LHR into Central London taking about 2 hours, an hour through immigration and another for tube or train. You will need to be back at LHR by 17.45 so you would need to set off back before 17.00. So you would only have about two hours. Time enough for a tube to Westminster and a look at the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the Thames etc. Not a lot of time but just about doable.

Windsor would give you more time, time for a meal for instance as well as some sightseeing.

Edit: Frank agrees and types faster!
