looking for recommendations on best places to visit while in England for 6 days. Love countryside destinations. Traveling late May early June. Will have car.
Six days is not a lot. It depends on what you really want to see. I loved York. If you are looking for an old English walled city with a beautiful cathedral, York is wonderful. Equally beautiful is Cornwall on the way opposite side of York. (i.e. you won't be able to visit both). Cornwall has a lot of historic sites, stone circles, and the beauty of the sea crashing along the rocks.
Or, if you are interested in York, you could spend time exploring Yorkshire including the coast and Whitby Abbey, Castle Howard etc...
We plan to visit York as well next year.
An easy stay trip from London is to take in Windsor Castle, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Stone Circle, Bath, the Cotswolds, Oxford returning to London.
Are there any regions of the English countryside that particularly interest you? Do you like coastal or inland, peaks or plains, agricultural or wild?
Then there's art and literature. The landscapes of John Constable are inspired by Suffolk & Essex. Or, in the literary vein, are you a Jane Austen fan (the southwest around Wilton, Bath, Chatsworth)? Shakespeare (Stratford-upon-Avon and London)? Bronte family (Yorkshire)?
As the other post noted, 6 days is not a lot of time, especially if you are dealing with jet lag from Hawaii. Be aware that English roads can be narrow and winding, with many roundabouts, therefore slower than they look on a map. The main motorways (freeways in US parlance) are multi-lane dual carriageways designated by "M" followed by a number. The "A" roads can be 4 lanes, even dual carriageway, but are often 2 lanes.
The Rick Steves principle of choosing a home base and making daily forays in different directions makes good sense so you won't spend time packing and unpacking, checking out and in. In 6 days you might want to spend your first night near the airport, then start out with your rental car, spend 2-3 nights in one place, 2-3 nights in a second place, and your remaining night again near the airport to prevent stress in getting there and having time to turn in your rental car.
Six days isn't very long. Where are you arriving and departing from? How many hours per day do you want to spend in the car? Are you only wanting to see countryside, or do you have interest in cities, towns, villages, churches, cathedrals, castles, stately homes, any particular period of history, and/or is there anything else you can tell us that will help you to get better advice?
I'd suggest the Cotswolds, or Dorset, or Yorkshire, depending on your interests and how much you want to drive.
A famed Tudor manor house in Shropshire called Pitchford has guest accommodations. The website gives many descriptions of surrounding villages and relaxing countryside activities here

6 days isn't very long considering the distance you are travelling. The jet lag will be overwhelming. You need to remember that driving there is on the opposite side to North America.
I know of someone who is currently spending time in jail in Australia. This person became confused while driving there (on the opposite side) and was in a serious car accident that killed his spouse and a baby in the car that he hit. He was charged and convicted of whatever the serious charge is called there and he was sentenced to jail. He was seriously injured himself and had to return to Australia to be tried before a judge.
The point being is that even driving on what is the norm here in North America after a long flight can be difficult anyways but on the narrow windy roads in a foreign country can be tricky. We enjoyed our time in the Cotswolds. Not too far to drive to and lots to see.
