5 days in Southeast England'

I have 5 days to explore Southeast England with a friend in August. I'm thinking 2 nights in or near Canterbury and 3 nights located between Dover and Brighton. We like quaint villages and small towns with good pubs and friendly locals. We want to explore castles and hike the White Cliffs. We will have a rental car that we will drop off at Gatwick.

I just looked it up. It looks great. Do you have a recommendation for accommodations too?

When we visited Rye, we stayed at the Rye Lodge. We enjoyed it. You’ll get a better view if your room is on the front of the lodge. Since we didn’t have reservations, we had a view of the parking lot.

Edited: In Canterbury we stayed at the Millers Arms. It was a nice hotel. Get a room on the front side, otherwise you may get the smell of the food being cooked.

The best place to see the white cliffs is from the sea. On land, the best option is the area between Beachy Head and Cuckmere Haven near Eastbourne.

You may struggle to find accommodation near the coast in August, so Rye maybe a problem. An alternative would be Lewes or any of the inland villages between these locations. I live within an hour of here, so I haven’t stayed in the area to be able to recommend anywhere.

Bodiam Castle is worth visiting.

Biddenden is a pretty place and The Three Chimneys one of the best pubs in the south east. Other favourites are the Swan on the Green, West Peckham; The Mermaid, Rye; The Coastguard, St Margaret's Bay; The Volunteer, Sutton Abinger; and The Stephen Langton, Friday Street; but there are countless others. The Good Pub Guide and the Good Beer Guide are good places to look.

From a base in Brighton (interesting, but I'd call it "funky" rather than "quaint"), I made day-trips to Lewes and Arundel. I enjoyed both, and I'd say the term "quaint" applies.

In Canterbury the Clare Ellen Guest House is great, we stayed there for six nights in September.. they have a parking area behind the B&B and it’s only a 10 minute walk to Canterbury city center and the Cathedral.
In Rye the Mermaid Inn in nice.
