Will be in the Lakes district in May for approx 4 nights. We will have a car and are looking to stay put in the one town/village and use the car to travel about. Suggestions please for a place to stay. Thanks in advance.
We enjoyed Keswick as a base. Highly walkable and good restaurants.
I also prefer Keswick and have stayed there may times over the 25 years we have been visiting the Lakes. We've stayed lots of different places but have recently found a nice little B&B right in town called Herdwick House. The owners are lovely and knowledgeable, the place is clean and comfortable, the price is more than fair, and you can easily walk to everything. Parking is on the street but we've never had a problem parking even in the height of the summer tourist season.
Keswick is so much better than the tourist traps of Ambleside and Windemere. Stay there and enjoy the scenery.
Just a bit of pedantry, it's the Lake District not Lakes. Referring to it as the Lakes District to the locals is likely to cause irritation.
We are also looking to tour this area, and i'm trying to figure out the best place to rent a car. Are you picking one up when you get there, or are you driving in/out from elsewhere?

My favorite drive is Honister Pass, driving south to north. Stop at the beginning of Buttermere (lake) and take a look at the pines in the south corner of the lake (over your left shoulder). The rest of the pass and the next lake (Crummock Water) is pretty too.
