24 hour tour of London from Greenwich

We have an overnight cruise stop in Greenwich so we could tour London from 8am to the late night. It is the last Sunday in June so West End will be dark :(. Should we take the Thames Clippers to London and back or one way. What would be a few highlights we could do in a day? The London Eye, Big Ben, Hyde Park, etc.? Recommendations on a tour?

I would check to see what's open Sundays. Go to Threadneedle St., the Banks are closed but that way you can see all the very decorative facades without traffic. See if you can get tickets for the Tower of London. I bet you cruise people can help you line things up. Go to Big Ben; you'll be right by Westminster and the Parliament Buildings. I would go to the Tate Modern Gallery and the National Gallery. Go to Covent Garden or other Markets. These are all pretty walkable or just hop on a double decker or take the tube. Greenwich has some sights such as the Maritime Museum and the Observatory and Guide Meridium.

Why do you think the West End will be dark?

Things to do in London in a day:

From Greenwich take a Jubilee train from the North Greenwich station to Westminster.

Parliament Square : Houses of Parliament with Elizabeth’s Tower with the Big Ben bell and nearby Westminster Abbey. If you arrive a few minutes before the hour you should wait to hear Big Ben toll.
From there cross Westminster Bridge to the London Eye.

OR from Westminster follow Birdcage Walk past St James Park up to Buckingham Palace

OR from the nearby St James Park Underground Station take a Circle or District line train to Tower Hill.
Across the road is the Tower of London

Yes, Claudia raises a good point, I wasn't sure what was meant by the west end being dark either. It will be daylight until about 9:30pm or so end of June. [edit: Sunset is 9:21pm 30th June. Twilight much later though]

There's nothing that a visitor would want to see that would be closed on a Sunday either. You might be out of luck if you want to do a grocery shop at a big Tesco, due to silly English trading laws, though. [edit: Sorry Kathleen I get your point on second reading that in The City of London some places may be closed. Just the places that serve the weekday office worker trade really though.]

The last Thames Clipper service to Greenwich leaves Westminster Pier at {edit: 10:54pm as correctly spotted by Lola below] on a Sunday.

There are some West End shows on Sunday, but most are matinees. Six the Musical has a 7pm Sunday performance. If you haven’t seen it, it is fun with very clever lyrics.

Ah. Good point, well made :) My brain was stuck on the geographic location, rather than "theatreland". I think it's time I went to bed :)

Thanks everyone! And yes I did mean West End Theatre. I checked out Six the Musical and it only has single tix left.
Any comment on whether I should take the Thames Clippers to get back and forth?

One other thing … If you like Shakespeare, the Globe has Sunday evening performances.

I haven’t taken the Thames Clipper, but if the weather is nice I am sure it would be a pleasant way to see some of London on your way in.

Re: the Thames Clipper as transport from Greenwich to Westminster I’d say no. Using the tube would be more practical especially if you go to an evening performance of theatre.

I have the opposite view—- I really dislike the Tube. It is noisy and it is underground, with no views. And everyone studying their phones or otherwise avoiding eye contact.

We get around London by walking, riding the buses, and taking the Thames Clippers.

Here is the Sunday schedule:

https://www.thamesclippers.com/plan-your-journey/timetable/weekend-eastbound

The last boat heading downriver (eastbound) departs Westminster Pier at 22:54 and arrives in Greenwich 43 minutes later. And of course you could take an earlier one, or catch the boat at a different pier.

I cannot imagine a more pleasant way to travel on a summer evening, cruising along with all those iconic buildings on both sides of the river; the boat passing under 8 bridges which are beautifully illuminated after dark. They actually form an art installation that will remain in place for several years.

I totally agree that the Clipper is a great way to go, especially late at night when you see the river in a whole new way. Not cheap, but you are on vacation on a cruise. There is a day ticket and you can use Oyster on the journey, and contactless.

Also the 188 bus runs from Tottenham Court Road to Greenwich frequently 24/7- that is an interesting journey through South London, especially on the top deck- about 60 minutes, less late at night.

It's not clear from your post whether you have been to London before. If you have, I would be tempted to just stay in Greenwich, which has enough of interest to easily fill a full day.

I'm a fan of the Thames Clipper service. I used to use it a lot between Millbank and Bankside. Like Claudia said, it's less efficient than the tube, but it is more fun. Some of the vessels have a small deck at the rear to sit outside.

If you did decide to use it to come up from Greenwich, you'd go to Embankment for The Strand and Piccadilly, where many theatres are, or Westminster for Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey etc. Millbank if you'd like to sail past The Houses of Parliament.

I myself will also be there for that Sunday and highly recommend London Walks as well!
