2 nights accommodation central to Hadrian & Durham

This is a slightly different request from a previous one I posted (where Cynthia recommended Hexham). We'll be coming from Alnwick. Our next day (two nights) will involve visits to Hadrian's Wall (Vindolanda) and Durham. Are we in our right minds thinking that it might be good to find someplace halfway in between these two locations (we'll have a car) or should we just do one-nighters adjacent to each location? I know that it's often a personal choice, but we thought that overall, we might easily save a bit of time commuting vs. packing and unpacking. So...that said, does anyone have a personal recommendation of a medium-priced location that includes breakfast? (I know there are lots of B&Bs around - I'm looking for a personal recommendation and location - if anyone has one.) Thank you!

I'm not sure that I understand your question, but could you stop at Hadrian's Wall, getting there early form Alnwick and then stay in Durham for 2 nights? This assumes you'll be headed south. Or you could spend the day in Durham and spend 2 nights along Hadrian's Wall.

Actually, eef, we're driving form Melrose to Alnwick so we'll have spent a whole day touring before the first of the two nights in the Durham area.

Ok , I understand better now. It sounds like you are trying to see both Hadrian's Wall and Durham in one day, or possibly you will have a little more time the following day. There is a lot to see along Hadrian's Wall. I loved walking along it. You could do that early in the day or in the evening. Durham is lovely. I adore the cathedral. I think it's really a matter of choice, depending on your priorities.

We traveled as a family of 4 and I wanted to stay in the same room, so our choices of places to stay were more limited. We stayed at the Ashcroft House in Haltwhistle and it was lovely. Great breakfast. We stayed at a Premier Inn in Durham and it was very cheap (29 pounds for the 4 of us but no breakfast).

We were in Haltwhistle for 3 nights and Durham for 1 night. We loved this part of England. If you could squeeze in one more night...

I'm all squeezed out as far as extra days. I already transferred one from Edinburgh to the Borderer area. That's why I was hoping to avoid spending nights in two different places but rather find a mid point. I shall keep searching for a solution. Thank you, eef, for your input!
