2 for 1 london and travelcard

Just want to confirm my thinking is correct, and still applies for now (Spring 2014). We are flying into Heathrow and staying in London for a week- we'll be using the tube and buses primarily. If we go to a rail station (Paddington Station is fairly close to where we're staying) and get a travel card printed on National Rail paper...we can use it for tube/bus travel and to present (for length of stay if we get the travelcard for the full 7 days) for the 2 for 1 deal. We don't have to go back to the train station every day to get a new card to use that day for our admission. (and also, our 10 year old doesn't need a ticket for the tube/buses- but our 12 year old will?)

Does that sound right?

OK let's try and disentangle it for you.

7-day travelcard. You are correct. Remember you will need passport sized photos for the photocard. It would be valid until date of expiry within the zones purchased.

Your children - Lets take it that we are talking about travel with you and not independently on their own.

10-year old: Requires nothing for bus, tram, DLR underground, overground and some National Rail routes.

12-year old: Requires a 11-15 Zip Oyster photocard. This gives free travel on buses and trams, and child-rate travel on underground, DLR, London Overground and most National Rail services. Costs £10. You need to apply online at least 4 weeks before travel, and collect from a TfL Travel Information Centre. The alternative is a child-rate travelcard, which since you are paying child's fares plus £10 might work out cheaper anyway.
