Cornwall

Hi,
Am hoping to travel in the Cotswolds region as well as Cornwall next summer, June, July.
Will be traveling by public transport (bus, train) and would love to know of " must sees" in those areas. I already have some ideas of where to go in the Cotswolds, but would appreciate further insights as well as recommendations for the Cornwall area.. I have the RS book on Great Britain, but am having trouble finding information about Cornwall.... Would appreciate any ideas that you have!!, ( even for the Cotswolds)
many thanks!
monica

Ps... Prefer charming country rather than big city!

There are lots of charming little seacoast towns. I really enjoyed St. Ives, Mevagissey and Fowey. Penzance is the last town on the main line from London and from there you can take a bus or walk to St. Michael's Mount. There are lots of gardens to visit and hikes to do and boat trips to take. St. Ives has a "branch" of the Tate Museum, if that interests you. Not far from St. Ives is St. Erth, where my husband's great family reunion took place in the '90s. I found it a wonderful little village ... maybe you will, too.

Try to get your Cornwall leg in before the bottom end of July - the summer hols kick off around the 20th & the GCSE kids take off a little sooner, so you can expect it to get pretty busy after that.
I've posted before about my favourite places (if you click my name then look for my post in March you'll find it), but I'd add that as you will miss the worst of the influx of visitors you'll have a great time almost anywhere and even Lands End is tolerable then.
If you're going for a few weeks, consider popping over to the Isles of Scilly for a couple of days - they're often ignored by overseas visitors and are about as postcard-perfect as you could hope for.

We are making a return visit to Cornwall next year, but will have a rental car.

Our plans are three nights in St. Ives, two or three nights in Fowey.
(You might want to consider Truro if you don't have a car, since it is supposed to have good connections.).

Cornwall has several estates with extensive gardens - check the National Trust website for a list of these.

They usually tell you how to get there by public transport.
Our short list includes Buckland Abbey, Cotehele, and Godolphin.

Castles to visit include Tintagel and Restormel.

Out on the Penrith Peninsula (extreme western tip) are many neolithic sites.

Men-en-tol, Lanyon Quoit, and the Merry Maidens Stone Circle are the most famous.

Sennen Cove is supposed to be beautiful, Lands End is also beautiful but has been tarted up with tacky commercialism.
Zennor is a charming village near St. Ives, the Tinners' Arms is an ancient pub in that little village.

Mousehole, near Penzance is a lovely fishing port.

I have been researching our trip for many months.
Two useful guide books are Rough Guide to Devon and Cornwall and The Hidden Places of Cornwall.
Transportation is of course your choice but it's a lot easier to see Cornwall with a rental car than to limit yourself to public transportation.
