York to London

After 10 nights in Scotland, our current plan is to spend two nights in York, then a late afternoon train to London, spending our last night at the Hilton at Paddington station (using points), then flight back to US at 2:10 pm the next day. We won't really have much time in London except for dinner and a couple hours in the morning before heading to the airport.

Now I'm rethinking and considering spending the last night in York (3 total), then taking the 7:30 or 8am train to London, Heathrow express, arriving at the airport at least 3 hours before our flight.

Thoughts? Keep the original plan, or spend another night in York?

I think you have it right first time, better to be 20miles from the airport rather than 200 if theres a rail breakdown, unlikely as that is.

Another vote for the original plan. We had a similar itinerary where we traveled from Bath to London to board the Eurostar. We encountered train line delays and Tube delays on the trip to London and got through the Eurostar security about 5 minutes before departure. Our 2-hour cushion of time was gone. That was way too stressful. Like Richard suggested, better to be 20 miles away.

It's great to finally get emails again when people respond to a post!

Thanks, we'll keep the original plan.
