train travel

perhaps obvious to some, but which is best train car to select...regular seating or dining car? can you go to dining car and get food to bring back to your seat? three of us are traveling London to Edinburgh via standard coach. are there any cars better than others? not doing 1st class as we will travel on Saturday and there does not appear to be any advantage to 1st other than fewer people and larger seat. traveling one way...about four hour trip...hoping to get seats with a table. I am going to try to book seat on east train co? think that is name...thank you for any tips!

You can usually carry food back to your seat. Hardly any regular UK trains have "dining cars" now in the sense of sit down meals.

Watch out for "quiet coaches" where you aren't allowed to make sounds with electronic devices. You may want to pick or avoid these depending on what you want to do.

Ruth,

yes you can eat at your seat. You can also BYOF too. They may also have a food/drink cart just like the airlines.

just so you know, many people scramble to get table seats.

also, once you get settled in, you may want to wonder up to the First class car and see how they differ.

happy trails.
