I purchased a Oyster Card for London about 2 years ago. Hoping to go this fall (2014) to London. do I have to get a new Oyster Card or can I just top up the old one.

Top up the old one, presuming it is still working. Any existing credit does not expire either.
If it's been more than 2 years, you will have to have it reactivated at a tube station. Take it to a window for this.
