I haven’t stayed in Windermere for years, as I prefer staying in Eskdale, but I have used many B & Bs on the sawdays.co.uk website, which have all been of great quality.

Hi there -

There are dozens of B&B’s and hotels around Windermere so I think it is a matter of pot luck by going through a site such as booking.com (other search engine sites are available!) and seeing what you think backed up by an overview of the reviews. Generally I would suggest that you get what you pay for, although I would suppose that prices are much of a muchness.

One word of advice - if you want to be near the lake, then you should be checking locations in Bowness-on-Windermere. The town of Windermere is a mile or so back from the lake itself.

Windermere gets very busy, filled by day trippers, some of whom I know from experience consider Windermere and the Lake District to be one and the same thing. If you think this might not make this locale right for you, try looking for accommodation around the Langdale area or Elterwater, or further afield, Grasmere (this latter also gets very busy due to Dove Cottage being nearby, but the whole place is smaller and at a remove from the main tourist hot spots of Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside).

If you are arriving in Windermere by public transport and have no plans to drive, then the other locations are a bit more difficult to get to, although not impossible.

Eskdale is lovely, but remote!

Hope you find somewhere to your liking.
