Traveling to and staying in the Lake District

Hello, this will be my first time in England, and I was hoping to take a train one day from London to the Lake District to visit Beatrix Potter's home, among other things. Could anyone possibly provide recommendations for hotels/B&Bs in the area, as well as advice regarding rental cars once we arrive at the station in Cumbria? We were also interested in perhaps taking a Windermere cruise, if anyone has experiences to share! Thanks so much.

World of Beatrix Potter bus 555 is a 15 minute ride or 3km half hour walk on the same side of the lake from Firthgard.

It will be a lot cheaper if you book your train fare from London to the Lake District (Oxenholme, Kendall, Windermere or wherever) in advance at http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/. The cheap advance tickets are strictly limited to the specific train, so if you miss it you will have to buy a new ticket at full price.

We absolutely loved our stay at Mosedale End Farm, a Farm Stay in Mosedale about 10 minutes from Keswick. Nice and quiet and just beautiful. Lots of great walks in the area and a fabulous pub 2 miles away. Check their website for more details.
