The STG Hotel Oxford Street?

We are doing the Best of Southern England tour in May 2027. We plan to head to London spending 4 nights before our return home. The STG Hotel has been recommended and I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on their stay there. Also any other hotel recommendations in the West End/Tottenham Road area.

Thanks!

Hi Mark G., we stay at a B&B in Fitzrovia, several blocks northwest of the Oxford St./Tottenham Court Road intersection, but your question about recommendations made me wonder. I brought up the area on the Apple Map on my phone, and I can see the STG Hotel. I’ve never stayed there, so can’t offer personal recommendations, but it only gets a rating of 1.3 out of 5. A thumbnail comment from one reviewer 3 months ago said it’s under new management and has sadly gone downhill. Again, no personal knowledge about any of that.

However, in the same building cluster as the STG, I saw there’s also a Zedwell Underground Hotel, with the actual address of 112 Great Russell Street. It has a higher rating, at 3.5 out of 5. One thumbnail review calls it a “hidden gem,” although they gave it only a 4. Again, no personal experience, and I don’t know about prices or amenities.

I don’t know who in their right mind would recommend the STG Hotel (the rebrand for St Giles). In my business travel days in London this was the absolute dire last resort. The rebrand may have brought some improvements but the place still gives me the ick.

The Zedwell Hotel in the same building is a windowless capsule hotel.

Admittedly the hotel puts you right by Tottenham Court Road Station, which is good for transport links.

What’s your rough budget? What do you want from a hotel? Loads of hotels in Bloomsbury area and that part of the West End.

The Montague on the Gardens is a very nice hotel nearby in Bloomsbury that gets a lot of recommendations here.

If your budget is a bit lower then the Imperial group of hotels are decent - a bit soulless but clean and well-located. https://www.imperialhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/?gclsrc=aw.ds

I have never stayed at this hotel but was aware of the St. Giles.

So, I looked up the hotel on Tripadvisor. It has a 1.5 rating out of 5. It is listed 1,206 out of 1,210 hotels.

Booking.com gives it a 6.5 out of 10.

Then I looked at the prices. They are very low. Extremely low for central London. You have to figure there must be something wrong for prices that low.

If you are looking for low prices, check out Travelodge. There are numerous locations.

I wonder if that was a friend or family member, or perhaps a guidebook or maybe an AI query?
