Southampton Dinner Dining Options

We'll be in Southampton two nights in July before we start our cruise. If you can recommend a good/great restaurant or two in Southampton I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Go to a pub, the food is usually good and the ambiance is nice. I was there last summer, can't remember the names of pubs but they were good.

We just stay in London by a train station that has fast trains out to Southhampton. Good restaurants are in the area.

Then it's a short train ride out there from the West End of London. I don't find Southhampton to be that interesting of a place to spend 2 days there that could be spent touring more popular travel sights.

I stayed in Southampton the night before my cruise staying at Ibis Budget. There was an Ibis across from Ibis Budget and a Novotel.

There is a nice shopping center with restaurants a bit of a walk from Ibis Budget but I could not get over there because of pouring rain and cold.

I wanted to eat at a nice restaurant but had to settle for TGIF. My only other choice was McDonald's. Come to think of it, I wish that I had walked over to the Ibis tor Novotel o eat.

There are other nice hotels which might have a dining room. I suggest that you contact the hotel you are staying at and ask them or go to Southampton Visitor Information. You can also try Trip Advisor.

A lot of people on this Forum do not care for Southampton but I thought that it had some real potential. I am sorry that the weather was so bad that I could not explore.

There are two main areas to look at. One is down by West Quay shopping centre. There’s a row of restaurants on the outer edge of the mall overlooking the old mediaeval city wall. The restaurants are all chains, but there’s some nice ones such as Franco Manca (for good pizza) and The Real Greek. I don’t know the exact address but if you look for one of those on Google Maps you’ll see where they all are.

The other area I’d recommend is Bedford Place, just at the northern end of the city centre. This is more for independent restaurants. You can eat Japanese or Portuguese or try Mauritian street food at Lakaz Maman, which was set up by a former Masterchef winner.

We've sailed from Southampton several times and struggled to find nice restaurants - those at West Quay are generally chains (Wagamama, an Italian, a Greek, a burger place) but we can recommend The Bayleaf. 56 High Street, a few blocks past the city gate. Delicious Indian in a lovely atmosphere. We can also recommend The Jetty, which is on the first floor of the Harbour House (very nice hotel), 5 Maritime Walk Ocean Village. A fairly limited menu but excellent.

I may be in the minority here, but I love Wagamama. I make a point to have a meal there every time I am in the UK. I don't mind a "chain restaurant" if the food is good and well priced.
