Sandringham Hotel, Cardiff

The Sandringham is an older hotel in a quaint, older building. Its location is a reasonable walk from the railway station and the airport bus stop, and to Cardiff Castle and the tourist sights in central Cardiff. It has no elevator, and you can expect to carry your bags up stairs—even the check-in desk is on the first floor. The staff are friendly and helpful. While checking in I learned details about someone’s boyfriend! The rooms are on the small side, but you have enough storage space for several days’ stay. The plumbing all works okay. Our toilet took a long time to recycle. While we were staying, there was a problem with the room above ours that caused water to drip into our bathtub. It was fixed in about 24 hours. The hotel is currently undergoing renovations; we encountered workmen in the hallways. While we didn’t have any trouble with noise or rowdy behavior, there are signs in the halls admonishing guests to be quiet, and also that they should not play with the fire extinguishers! The breakfast is very good. Cooked breakfasts are made to order from a menu that allows you to choose any or all components of a full English breakfast. There is a restaurant, and guests receive a discount, but we didn’t get around to eating there.
