I know people slag off Paddington as a place to stay, but if you happen to be staying in that area (which I was because I was traveling with a friend who had a business event at the Hilton Paddington, which was VERY nice and not within our budget), take a look at the Darlington Hyde Park in Sussex Gardens or one its neighbors. The whole block on both side appeared to be small hotels. The location was very handy for us with good transportation connections. The room was very comfortable. We were in a twin room on the top floor. The beds were comfortable and separated by at least two feet (I've had twin room where the beds were touching each other). The bathroom was spacious, light-filled and modern. Everything was clean and fresh. Coin laundry available, but not much else as far as public spaces, as far as I could tell. Breakfast was fine. It had the usual buffet items, plus elements of a Full English (included in the price if you book directly with the hotel), just not cooked to order (except maybe the toast). Coffee was OK. I paid 460GBP for three nights in March 2025, booked direct. They held our luggage after checkout, no fee. Friendly staff.
I like to stay in the Paddington area. I've stayed in several of the hotels near Sussex Gardens. Lately I've used Stylotel. it's beginning to look a bit frayed but the breakfast is great, the staff friendly, and the location very convenient. I stayed there (over several trips) a couple of weeks last year and plan to do the same this year. I always start to get over the eight hour jet lag by going to nearby Hyde and Kensington Gardens for a brisk walk. Access to tube and buses is easy too.
We stay at the very popular Premier Inn Paddington Basin. It is about 500 yards behind Paddington Station across a bridge and around the block. It is a high rise modern property with a very good bar/restaurant. And the price is very favorable for London.
What I like is that you can get to Paddington Station from Heathrow Airport in 15 minutes. Or you can take the new Elizabeth Line there. The Circle Line also is in Paddington to get you to the popular tourist sites in just a few minutes.
There are many restaurants and fast food places across the street--for our granddaughter who travels with us.
The Paddington Basin area is very nice. I walked along there toward Little Venice. Would have liked to do a boat tour there, but time did not permit. Also, the boat was kind of pricey for my taste.
