What is a good hotel (not too expensive) near Paddington Station
I've stayed in three hotels near Paddington station. Most recently (October 2017) I was at the
Athena Hotel, 110-114 Sussex Gardens, London, Hyde Park
For three nights over a weekend the rate then was 250 pounds for a single and 305 for a double. It's very near a bus line and a short walk from the station.
Again, it depends on what you consider "not too expensive" and time of year you plan to visit. We were happy with the location and comfort of Hotel Darlington Hyde Park - we walked the few blocks from Paddington Station with our luggage, and found the various tube stations, bus routes, and restaurants handy, as well as Hyde Park, etc.
Premier Inn is an English Hotel Chain that provides good value. Here is a link to their page that describes their hotels near Paddington.

I have only had positive experiences with this chain.
The Falcon Hotel, a five minute walk to Paddington Station.
Number 63 on Bayswater Road is reasonably priced (£80 for a single, £110 for a family room), and about 10 minutes walk to Paddington Station. The staff is very friendly, there is an elevator, room service is inexpensive and the breakfast is excellent, too. Sunday nights are half price when you book the full weekend. http://www.number63.co.uk/ Before anyone asks, I don't work for them - just had a really good experience there last summer. I'm planning on returning this June as well.
Cathy, I can also attest that No. 63 is a good place. Always check to make sure their desk hours meet with your arrival needs, though. As I recall, they don’t have 24 hour reception.
Also a fan of No. 63.
